Each AP level social studies class includes a heavy amount of reading, including much from a dense textbook. In order to read well it is important to develop a number of reading skills. Taking a strategic approach to your reading will make you a better reader and therefore, more likely to obtain and retain knowledge as well as think more productively before, during, and after you read.

Before starting to read, it is important to preview your reading, whether it is a one page primary source document, a website, or fifteen pages of a textbook. While during the school year it will be essential for you to preview all of your readings, especially each installment of textbook reading you are assigned, for this summer course we will use a website to practice previewing.

Activity 2.8 - Previewing model:
  • What do you think of our previewing model?

In my point of view, I understand the concept of the two columns of CCQ's. I think it's fairly easy, because it's the thoughts of the readers that just put into words, then on the right side - comments are added to elaborate on the reader's views/notes.
  • What aspects of previewing did we utilize?

Using the previewing essentials, you've asked questions in attempt to understand the topic. You've also made predictions, connections, and comments with your notes, to help you get a deeper understanding. There were also notes on how the layout was used in the article, to show the general idea of the organization - if it was non-profit, or it was actually trying to make money out of the article. You've also noted the important necessities, and made many inferences, and used evidence from the article to prove the notes. Lastly and not least, you've identifed the vocabulary that was being used in the article - and you make note of it, as to what they could be described for.

Activity 2.9 - Previewing assignment

  3. It can depend on one's intelligence, beauty, talent, and so on. Well, let's just say this; it depends on the person who embodies the qualities. From one's insolence, to one's charm, it all varies throughout a character.
  4. The ads are for weekly subscribers who might be interested in subscribing the articles from Pyschologists. Other ads introduces readers to therapists help near local areas. The organization is at the same time trying to help those in need, but also trying to gain some profit by gaining subscribers.
  5. Such is true, it is the most teacheable and encouraging subject. It requires effort to gain mental and emotional discipline. But grace can also be something that you have or don't.
  6. Charisma is a rare quality yet it is common. Charismatic leaders such as presidents inspires devotion; inspires in general. (for example: Abraham Lincoln). Even public speakers, like Martin Luther King Jr. who devotes himself to rid of segregation.
