Activity 2.1: Getting started

1. What did you learn about academic vocabulary from watching the video clip?
From watching the video clip, I learned that academic vocabulary is more proper, and also more formal to use. A person's use of academic vocabulary can express their personality, how they were educated, and how serious they are. Just like the example in the video clip, the guy who used proper academic vocabulary got the job, because he's more adequate and well-behaved. "Academic vocabulary can help us succeed."

2. How would you define academic vocabulary?
I would define academic vocabulary as proper, formal language that may express one's intelligence.

3. Predict how academic vocabulary can help you be successful in your social studies classes as well as other academic classes?
I believe that academic vocabulary may help a student develop their education, not only in social studies classes, but as well as academic classes. Academic vocabulary is always a necessity in academic writing. The vocabulary can create certain types of profound expressions when describing an event, a person, a subject, etc.

Activity 2.2: What do you know about academic terms.

Updates/commentaries of vocabs should be found in the Academic Terms Vocabulary document in (examples:)

Activity 2.3

Similarities/Differences

Imply/Infer: (different) - These two terms are different. Imply is to express a thought/ idea indirectly. Infer is to express an idea with reason and evidence based on previous knowledge.
Bias/Point of View: (different) - The term bias refers to one's belief and one's point of view is actually based on what is perceived and viewed, their point of view can be acknowledged.
Evaluate/Assess: (similar) - To assess and evaluate is similar to each other, referring to classifying and making judgment by analyzing.

new pair of vocab: Perspective/point of view: (similar): I believe the two terms are similar, because from one's perspective and point of view, the views from from a deceptive point where it can be viewed.

Academic vocabulary is and should be used on a daily basis for basically everything. In writing, in blogging, in having conversations, getting a job, doing an interview, talking to an authority figure, etc.

2. How would you define academic vocabulary?
I would define academic vocabulary as proper, formal language that may express one's intelligence.

Academic vocabulary is words that are used formally to talk to someone like a teacher, guardian, and so on. It is also used in academic writings, and makes simplistic sentences complete, and detailed.

Activity 2.5: Evaluating other vocabulary tools

Visual thesarus

Free Rice

In my point of view, the vocabulary sources that are most useful to me is the Visual Thesaurus and Free Rice. The visual thesaurus allows me to learn new vocab, but at the same time allow me to visualize, so I can acknowledge as to what the terms actually mean. As for Free Rice, I liked it since I used it in my primary and secondary school. Free Rice is a great way to learn new vocabulary and at the same time review for vocabulary as well as other subjects. There are also math tabs, foreign language, and I believe a history tab, too :)
